Initial Construction of the Port started in 1978 as part of the economic development of the UAE. Full operations commenced in 1983. Since then the Port has embarked on a continuing process of enhancement to both its facilities and its comprehensive range of functions. The latest development phase was completed at the end of 2002 with the dredging of the entrance and the inner Basin to 15 metres, the completion of and additional 600 metres of main quay (gibing 1.4 km of continuous quay), additional paved area, (giving storage for up to 30,000 teus), and the provision of a State of the Art Bulk loader to cater for the Emirates large and growing aggregate export market. Additional development, currently underway and due for completion early 2005 includes an additional 720 metres of Tanker Berth Quays along the Northern Breakwater.
