The United Arab Emirates was established in December 1971. Since then,it has attracted international attention,at first because of its extensive oil reserves, and its strategic location at the mouth of the Arabian Gulf, but now thanks to its unparalleled programme of economicand social development. Over the course of the last quarter of a century, benefiting both from stableand wise leadership, and from an enviable social stability, the country has witnessed the creation of a classic modern welfare state.Education, health care and social ervices have been extended to all its citizens, with men, women and children being furnished with the necessary opportunities to play their full rolesin society from cradle to grave. A federation of seven emirates formerly known as theTrucial States, the UAE occupies a total areaof 83,600 square kilometersin the east of theArabian peninsula,sharing with the neighboringSultanate of Oman the area now becoming known as the Horn of Arabia. Its constituent parts are Abu Dhabi, the largest, which has the bulk of the oil reserves and covers around 80 percentof the land area, Dubai, the commercial center,Sharjah, and four smaller emirates, in order of size, Ras al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm al Qaiwain and Ajman. The main cities or towns of each emirate, which carry the same name, are all on the southern shores of the Arabian Gulf, apart from strip on the Gulf of Oman, outside the Strait of Hormuz. The country is a founder member of the Arab Gulf Co-operation Council, created at a summit conference of the six member states held in Abu Dhabi in May 1981, and is also a member of the League of Arab States and the Islamic Conference organization as well as of the United Nations and most of its affiliate bodies. The Head of State is Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the founder of the federation, who was re-elected in late1996 by his colleagues on the Supreme Council of Rulers to a fourth consecutive five-year tern as President, while the Vice President and Prime Minister is the Ruler of Dubai, SheikhMaktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum. It also managed to preserve its heritage, both that ofits people and that of the land itself, and the comb ination of both the modern facilities and the heritage is the reason for the countrys emergence as a fascinating and enjoyable place to visit, and in which to live.
